How to Use Your Runes

Rune Basics:
Runes don’t give answers to all life’s problems, but present a new perspective to a situation or a ‘map’ with milestones for you to decide the best way forward. The wisdom on offer brings objectivity to answers given to achieve balance and harmony

Basic Rune Reading consists of either one or three Runes. Odin's Rune, a single Rune is an excellent way of clearing the confusion of a situation. Three Rune reading from left to right can give you information or overview about the situation, then the course of action with options needed to move forward, and then about the new situation or outcome that develops from your suitable and timely action

Rune Legend

Runes were used by the early Germanic tribes of central Europe and are believed to date back 1,700 years ago, though many believe they date back much earlier. They were used for writing, divination and magick. They were used throughout northern Europe, Scandinavia, the British Isles, and Iceland from about 100 B.C.E. to 1600 C.E. Runic inscriptions of great age have even been found in North America, supporting stories that the Vikings arrived in the Americas long before Columbus. ‘Rune’ means mystery, secret or whisper and was a written language rather than spoken, each symbol having its own individual sound and meaning. Signs and symbols have always fascinated mankind.

According to legend the runes are a magical alphabet bequeathed by the Lord Odin. He sought divine wisdom and knowledge through self-sacrifice as he hung upside down from the Yggdrasil or World Tree. Cut by his own sword and tormented by hunger and thirst, he hung for nine days and nights. Whilst hanging there, the tree swayed with the wind and the vision of the Runes appeared before him within the branches. Hence the Runic Alphabet came to be, after Odin was granted the gift of prophecy and divinations, which he bestowed upon the world.

The magical Rune Alphabet long forgotten through the course of time was once widely used by old European cultures, for example, Vikings, Germanic, Celt and Anglo Saxon tribes. The Runes have been in existence for many thousands of years, some older Runes appear in ancient cave paintings around the world.

Cleansing Your Runes

When you obtain runes, you may wish to cleanse them before use, whichever method you feel suitable:
1. Runes can be laid in the light of the full moon.
2. They can be held under running water from a natural source such as a stream or the ocean ensure they are in their bag.
3. They can be smudged by smoke from incense sticks that suit you.
4. They can be laid on the earth or in the sun for as long you see suitable.
